Problema Solution

The product of 2 consecutive positive integers is 11 more than their sum. Find the integers.

We sometimes use the zero method in these.

Answer provided by our tutors

The 2 consecutive positive integers can be written as: x and x+1, where x is integer, x>0

The product of 2 consecutive positive integers is 11 more than their sum:

x(x + 1) = 11 + (x + x + 1)

........

x = 4

We need to ignore the negative solution -3 because x can only be positive.

x + 1 = 4 + 1 = 5

Indeed:

4*5 = 20

11 + (4 + 5) = 20

The 2 consecutive positive integers are 4 and 5.
