Problema Solution

The Royal Fruit Company produces two types of fruit drinks. The first type is 65% pure fruit juice, and the second type is 95% pure fruit juice. The company is attempting to produce a fruit drink that contains

70% pure fruit juice. How many pints of each of the two existing types of drink must be used to make

60 pints of a mixture that is 70% pure fruit juice?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

x = pints of the first type of juice (65% pure fruit juice)
y = pints of the second type of juice (95% pure fruit juice)

The mixture is 60 pints of 70% pure fruit juice:

x + y = 60

0.65x + 0.95y = 0.70*60

by solving the system of equations we find

x = 50 pints

y = 10 pints

50 pints of the first type of juice should be mixed with 10 pints of the second type of juice.
