Problema Solution

The third angle in an isosceles triangle is 20 more than 3 times as large as each of the two base angles. Find the measure of each angle.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

a = the base angles
b = the third angle

Since they are angles of a triangle we have

a + a + b = 180 (the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180)

2a + b = 180

The third angle is 20 more than 3 times as large as each of the two base angles:

b = 20 + 3a

We have the following system of equations:

2a + b = 180
b = 20 + 3a

........

a = 32

b = 116

The measures of the angles are: the base angles are 32 each while the third angle is 116.
