Problema Solution

To get to work, you drive for 20 minuets at 30 miles an hour, and walk 10 more minuets at 3 miles per hour. What was your average speed

Answer provided by our tutors

Average speed 'v' equals the total distance divided by the time.

First we need to find the distance.

The driving distance is:

d1 = (20/60)*30 (distance = speed*time)

d1 = 10 mi

The walking distance is:

d2 = (10/60)*3

d2 = 0.5 mi

The total time of the travel is:

t = 20 + 10

t = 30 min

t = 30/60 hr

t = 0.5 hr

Now we find the average speed:

v = (d1 + d2)/t

v = (10 + 0.5)/0.5

v = 21 mph

The average speed was 21 mph.
