Problema Solution

Translate the following problem into a quadratic equation, then solve it using the quadratic formula.

The length of a rectangular air filter is 9 inches less than twice the width. Find the length and width of the filter if the area is 425 square inches.

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

x = the width, x>0

2x - 9 = the length

A = 425 it^2 is the area

Since A = width*length we have:

x(2x - 9) = 425

........

x = 17 in

2*17 - 9 = 34 - 9 = 25 in

The length is 25 inches while the width is 17 inches.
