v1 = 450 mph the average speed of the plane that goes west
v2 = 500 mph the average speed of the plane that goes east
d = 2280 mi the distance between the planes
t = the time of the travel
Since speed = distance/time follows distance = speed*time and the planes are flying in opposite direction we have:
v1*t + v2*t = d
450t + 500t = 2280
