Two cars are 468 mi apart and traveling toward each other along the same road. They meet in 3 hr. One car is traveling 8mph slower than the other. What is the speed of each car?

v = the speed of the slower car

v + 8 = the speed of the faster car

t = 3 hr the time of the travel

d = 468 mi the sum of the distances that each car travels

Since distance = speed*time we have:

vt + (v + 9)t = d

3v + 3(v + 8) = 468

v = 74 mph

74 + 8 = 82 mph

The speed of the  slower car is 74 mph, while the speed of the faster car is 84 mph.
