Problema Solution

two sailboats leave a marine 2 hours apart. the distance d, in miles, that each sailboat is from the marina at time t, measures in hours since the second sailboat left the marina, is given by d=8(t+2) for the first sailboat and d= 12t for the second

Answer provided by our tutors

The problem statement is ambiguous since the second sailboat left 2 hours after the first sailboat left... we assume that they question is something like "after how many hours were the two sailboats at the same distance".

d=8(t+2)

d=12t

d=48

t=4

So after 4 hours both sailboats will have travelled 48 miles.
