Two trains stared at the same time from the same station and traveled in opposite directions. One traveled at a rate of 50 mph and he other at a rate of 60 mph. in how many hours were they 660 miles apart.

Let

v1 = 50 mph the average speed of the first train

v2 = 60 mph the average speed of the second train

d = 660 mi the total distance between them

t = the time of the travel

Since speed = distance/time we have distance = speed*time:

The travel travel in opposite directions thus the sum of the their distances passed is equal to the distance between them:

v1t + v2t = d

50t + 60t = 660
