exercising, and she wants to swim 3 times the amount she runs. What is the minimum amount of time she must spend doing each exercise?

Let

x = hours of running

3x = hours of swimming (3 times the hours of running)

Since Kate wants to exercise minimum 8 hours we have the following inequality:

x + 3x >= 8

4x >= 8 divide both sides by 4

x >= 8/4

x >= 2

Kate must run minimum 2 hours and swim minimum 3*2 = 6 hours.
