You format a document in three columns of equal width. The document is 8.5 inch wide. You want left and right margins of 1 inch each. Between the columns there is a gutter that is one eighth as wide as each column. What is the width of each column?

(1/8)x is the width of the gutter.
Since there are 3 columns we assume that there are 2 gutters between them.
Now we can write:
1 + 1 + 3x + 2*(1/8)x = 8.5
