MATH CLASSES

Course Title:

Introduction to Geometry
Instructor: Ms. Hodges

Description:

This course is designed to assist students who are
taking a year-long geometry program, solidifying the basic skills
they need to succeed in that class. Daily lessons will involve some
teacher presentation , followed by an activity to investigate the
day’s focus. Each class will begin with activities that help
students learn basic geometry terms and the coordinate graph
system . Subsequently, students will explore the properties of
triangles
, parallel lines and transversals, polygons, and circles .
Students will practice using the Pythagorean Theorem and
explore ways to develop sound proofs; in addition, students will
pursue constructions and investigate the properties of 3-
dimensional figures as well as explore an introduction to
trigonometric functions .

Course Title:

Introduction to Algebra 1
Instructor
: Ms. Hodges

Description:

This course is designed to help students be
successful in Algebra 1, both in terms of completing the
curriculum successfully and in developing a sound grasp of the
concepts beyond merely learning procedures and formulas . Each
of the fifteen Saturdays will have a specific focus, roughly
following the basic Algebra 1 high school format, from graphing
equations to factoring polynomials. Each lesson will be three-fold:
First, the concept of the day will be presented briefly but
dynamically. This introduction will be followed by small group
activities during which students investigate the material and
discover patterns and rules . Lastly, there will be time, every
session, to complete homework from school and to address any
issues or concerns students have with their math schoolwork.

Course Title:

Math Learning Center
Instructor: Mrs. Johnson-Foell MA

Description:

Description: This course is designed to provide the advanced
math student a learning environment that will both motivate and
encourage further investigation into higher math. Instruction
consists of a series of lectures followed by an opportunity to
work on homework or improvement of skills. The lectures will
cover material that is not only applicable to the discipline but also
interesting and entertaining. Students will develop skills for
problem solving that are useful in other areas of study such as
science, history, and art.

Course Title:

Introduction to Algebra 2
Instructor: Mrs. Johnson-Foell

Description:

This course will encourage and provide a stimulating,
challenging learning environment for the second-year algebra
student. Skills learned earlier, such as investigating and problem-solving
will be enhanced by the classroom environment. Lecture
series will be followed by an opportunity to work on homework or
skills improvement. The lesson plan will have checkpoints to insure
understanding of subjects visited. The goal is to teach and
evaluate the students’ progress as they participate in Saturday
Academy classes. This course will provide students with the
encouragement and freedom to learn the topics needed to both
support and enhance regular school Algebra 2 courses. The
students will develop skills to solve complicated algebraic
problems. These skills are the pre-requisite for learning most
branches of modern mathematics. This course will provide the
student with tools to move forward and study other fields in
higher education.
