In a reforestation program, 3680 seedlings were planted. Twice as many firs as elmelms were planted. The number of swillows planted was 80 more than triple the number of elms. How many of each type of seedling was planted?

Answer provided by our tutors

We will assume that there were only swallows, elms and firs planted.

Let

x = the number of elms planted

y = the number of swallows planted

z = the number of firs planted

x + y + z = 3680

z = 2x

y = 80 + 3x

........

x = 600 elms

y = 1,880 swallows

z = 1,200 firs

There were 600 elms, 1,880 swallows and 1,200 firs planted.
