Problema Solution
Miguel drove to the mountain it took 9 hrs to get there on the way home it took only 4 hours his average rate was 40 mph faster on the way home how far does Miguel live from the mountains
Answer provided by our tutors
t1 = 9 hr the time of the travel on the way to the mountain
v = the rate on the way to the mountain
t2 = 4 hr the time of the travel back from the mountain
v + 40 = the rate on the way home (back from the mountain)
Since distance = rate*time and the distance on the way to the mountain equals the distance on the way back we have:
vt1 = (v + 40)t2
9v = 4(v + 40)
........
click here to see the equation solved for v
........
v = 32 mph
Next we find the distance:
vt1 = 32*9 = 288 mi
Miguel lives 288 miles from the mountains.
