Problema Solution

One inlet pipe can fill an empty pool in 6 hours, and a drain can empty the pool in 12 hours. How long will it take the pipe to fill the pool if the drain is left open?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let 'x' represent the time needed for the poll to fill when the drain is open.

The rate of filling the pool minus the rate of emptying the pool equals the rate of filling the pool when the drain is open:

1/6 - 1/12 = 1/x

x = 12 hrs

It will take 12 hours for the pipe to fill the pool when the drain is open.
