Problema Solution

Robs tractor is just as fast as Erin's. It takes rob 1 hour more than it takes Erin to drive to town. If rob is 24 miles from town and Erin is 12 miles from town, how long does it take Erin to drive to town?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

v = the rate of each of the tractors

t = Erin's time

t + 1 = Rob's time

d1 = 24 mi the distance that Rob travels

d2 = 12 mi the distance that Erin travels

Since average rate = distance/time we have:

d1/(t + 1) = d2/t

24/(t + 1) = 12/t

........

t = 1 hr

Erin needs 1 hour to drive to town.
