Problema Solution

The Warbler House Inn hosts private parties at two different rates. Rate A includes a flat fee of $1600 plus $30 for each guest in excess of the first 25. Rate B simply charges $40 for each guest. For what size parties will using rate B cost less than using rate A?

Answer provided by our tutors

set up two equations. let x be the number of guests

rate A: 1600 + 30(x - 25)

rate B: 40x

set up an inequality so that rate B is less than rate A

40x < 1600 + 30(x - 25)

solve for x

40x < 1600 + 30x - 750

40x < 850 + 30x

subtract 30x from both sides

10x < 850

divide both sides by 10

x < 8.5

So if there are less than 8 guests, rate B will cost less than rate A
