Problema Solution

A train travels 120 miles and returns the same distance in a total of 5 hours. If the speed of the train averaged 20mph slower on the return trip, how fast did the train travel in each direction?

Answer provided by our tutors

suppose speed going = x

then speed returning = (x-20)

we get

120/x + 120/(x-20) = 5

solving we get x = 60

speed going  = 60

and returning  = 40
