Problema Solution

a states high school athletic association seperates its schools into two divisions. Together division 1 and division 2 have a total of 351 schools. there are about 5.5 times as many schools in division 1 than in division 2. How many schools are in each division?

Answer provided by our tutors

Assume divission 2 has x number of schoolss.

Therefore division 1 will have 5.5x number of schools (since there are about 5.5 times as many schools in division 1 than in division 2).

Now x+5.5x = 351 (since  together division 1 and division 2 have a total of 351 schools)

or 6.5x = 351

or x = 351/6.5 = 54

Therefore division 1 will have 5.5x = 297 students and division 2 will have x = 54 students (Answer)
