Problema Solution

an in-line skating rink's charge for skate rental and safety equipment is $3.50 an hour or you can simply rent safety equipment for $1.50 an hour. You can buy some skates from your friend for $40 or you can just rent them. Either way you must rent the safety equipment. How many hours must you skate for the cost of renting and buying skates to be equivalent?

Answer provided by our tutors

let 'h' represent the number of hours at the rink

total cost, 'T', without your own skates:

T = 3.50h

total cost, 'T' with skates purchased from your friend:

T = 1.50h + 40

we solve for 'h' when the costs are equal:

3.50h = 1.50h + 40

2h = 40

h = 20

you must skate for 20 hours before the cost of renting and buying skates is equivalent
