inches tall. The top margin is
1
2
inch and the bottom margin is 5
4
inches. The space between each picture is at least
6
16
inch. How many 1.5-inch-tall pictures can fit in one column?
Answer provided by our tutors
NOTE: the fractions expressed in this problem are difficult to read, we see the following measures:
page dimension: 8 x 11.5 inches
top margin: 1/2 = 0.5 inches
bottom margin: 5/4 = 1.25 inches
space between pics: 6/16 = 3/8 = 0.375 inches
the page is 11.5 inches tall with a top margin of 0.5 inches and a bottom margin of 1.25 inches
space left for the pictures is then:
11.5 - 0.5 - 1.25 = 9.75
let 'x' represent the number of pictures, we then need 'x-1' spaces between each picture and we have 9.75 inches to work in:
9.75 = 1.5x + 0.375(x-1)
x = 5.4
one column can contain 5 pictures and there will be some space left over
