Problema Solution
You and a friend share the driving on a 280-mile trip. Your average speed is 58 miles per hour. Your friends average speed is 53 miles per hour. You drive one hour longer than your friend. How many hours did each of you drive?
Answer provided by our tutors
let
x = the time in hours that the friend drove
y = the the time hours that i drove
y = x + 1
since the average speed = distance/time +> distance = speed*time
280 = x*53 + y*58
by solving the system of equations
y = x + 1
x*53 + y*58 = 280
we find
x = 2 hours
y = 3 hours
i drove 3 hours while my friend drove 2 hours.
