Problema Solution

Two planes left an airport at noon. One flew east the other flew west at twice the speed. After 3 hours the planes were 2700 miles apart? How fast was each plane flying?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

the speed of the first plane be: v

the second plane is flying in opposite direction at twice the speed of the first: 2v

After 3 hours the planes were 2700 miles apart

speed = distance/time => distance = speed*time

v*3 + 2v*3 = 2700

by solving the equations we find

v = 300 mph

2v = 2*300 = 600 mph

the speed of the first plane was 300 mph while the speed of the second was 600 mph.
