a tank can be filled by one pipe in ten minutes and by a second pipe in nine minutes but when its full the tank can be drained by the third pipe in just five minutes. if the tank is empty and all three pipes are open in how many hours will the tank be filled

the rate of the second pipe is 1/9 tanks per min


the rate of the third pipe is 1/5 tanks per min


if all pipes are open and t is the time that it is needed for the tank to be filled we have


t(1/10 + 1/9 - 1/5) = 1


by solving we find


t = 90 min


t = 90/60 hr


t = 1.5 hr
