There are two machines that produce aluminum cans. The newer machine can produce 7200 cans in 200 minutes. It takes the older machine 300 minutes to produce that many cans. If the two machines work together, how long will it take them to produce 7200 cans?

the rate of the newer machine is 7200/200 = 36 cans per minute
the rate of the older machine is 7200/300 = 24 cans per minute
the together rate of the both machines is 36 + 24 = 60 cans per minute
let t = the time the machines need to make 7200 cans together we have
t*60 = 7200 divide both sides by 60
t = 7200/60
t = 120 min
t = 2 hr
if the two machines work together they will need 2 hours to produce 7200 cans.
