Problema Solution

The distance that a free falling object falls is directly proportional to the square of the time it falls. If an object fell 90 ft in 4 seconds, how far will it have fallen by the end of 8 seconds?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

d = the distance the free falling object falls

t = the time of the fall

d = k*t^2, where k is constant

an object fell 90 ft in 4 second means d = 90 ft, t = 4 sec

90 = k*4^2

16k = 90 divide both sides by 16

k = 90/16

k = 5.625

now the formula is d = 5.625*t^2

for t = 8 sec we have

d = 5.625*8^2

d = 360 ft

by the end of the 8 seconds the object will fall 360 ft.
