Problema Solution

Mrs. Berrill wants to organize her Christmas Decorations. She found red and green containers which hold 144,12, or 1 item. If she has 395 ornaments of assorted sizes, how many boxes of each size container should she buy?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

x = the number of containers that hold 144 items

y = the number of containers that hold 12 items

z = the number of containers that hold 1 item

144x + 12y + z = 395

for x = 2 we have

144*2 + 12y + z = 395

12y + z = 395 - 288

12y + z = 107

for y = 2 we have

12*8 + z = 107

z = 107 - 96

z = 11

144*2 + 12*8 + 11*1 = 395

to fit all the ornaments, one solution is to buy: 2 containers that hold 144 ornaments, 8 containers that hold 12 ornaments and 11 containers that hold 1 ornament.
