Problema Solution

Steve plans to construct a bookcase with three shelves. The height of the case is to be 60 cm more than the width and only 6 meters of the wood is available. What should be the dimension of the bookcase?

Answer provided by our tutors

let

h = the height of the case

w = the width of the case

the height of the case is to be 60 cm more than the width

h = w + 60

only 6 meters = 600 cm of the wood is available

2(h + w) = 600 divide both sides by 2

h + w = 300

by solving:

h = w + 60

h + w = 300

we find:

h = 180 cm

w = 120 cm
