Problema Solution
Jose drove to the mountains last weekend. There was heavy traffic on the way there, and the trip took
8
hours. When Jose drove home, there was no traffic and the trip only took
5
hours. If his average rate was
21
miles per hour faster on the trip home, how far away does Jose live from the mountains?
Answer provided by our tutors
let
t1 = 8 hr the time of the trip to the mountains
t2 = 5 hr the time of the trip back from the mountains
v = the rate of the trip to the mountains
v + 21 = the rate of the trip back home (f his average rate was 21 miles per hour faster on the trip home)
d = the distance from Jose's home to the mountains
since speed = distance/time we have
v = d/t1
v = d/8
v + 21 = d/t2
v + 21 = d/5
plug v = d/8 into the last equation:
d/8 + 21 = d/5
by solving we find:
d = 280 mi

Jose lives 280 miles away from the mountains.
