Problema Solution

Taylor went on a 60 mile trip to a soccer game. On the way back, due to road construction she had to drive 6 miles per hour slower. This made the trip take 5 hours longer. How fast did she drive to the soccer game?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

v = Taylor's speed on the way to the soccer game, v>0

v - 6 = Taylor's speed on the way back from the soccer game, v-6>0, v>6

t = the time Taylor spent driving to the soccer game

t + 5 = the time Taylor spent driving back from the soccer game

d = 60 mi the distance in each direction

Since speed = distance/time follows time = distance/speed

d/v + 5 = d/(v - 6)

60/v + 5 = 60/(v - 6)
