Problema Solution
A certain sheikh owned many ponies. Someone once asked him how many he had,
and he replied: “If you add one fourth of the number to one third of the number, you will then have ten more than one half the number.” How many ponies did he have?
Answer provided by our tutors
one fourth of the number plus one thirs of the number is: 1/4x + 1/3x
10 more than half the number is: 1/2x + 10
We know these must be equal, so set them equal and solve for x.
1/4x + 1/3x = 1/2x + 10
7/12x = 1/2x + 10
1/12x = 10
x=120
Therefore, there are 120 ponies :)
