Problema Solution

Hanna runs a coffee house where chocolate almond coffee beans sell for $7.00 per pound. They also have hazlenut coffee beans for $6.10 per pound. Ellen asks Hanna to make a 6 pound mixture of the chocolate almond and hazlenut beans. How many pounds of each should be used so that the mixture costs $6.40 per pound?

Answer provided by our tutors

Cost of chocolate almond coffee beans = $7

Cost of hazelnut coffee beans = $6.10

Total weight required = 6 pounds

Cost required = $6.4

Total price for the required weight = 6*6.4 = $38.4

Let weight of almond coffee beans = x

=> Hazelnut coffee beans = 6 - x

=>Cost of the mixture = 7x + 6.1(6-x)

=> 7x + 36.6 - 6.1x = 38.4

=> 0.9x = 1.8

=> x = 1.8/.9

=> x = 2

=> Chocolate almond coffee beans = 2 pounds

=> Hazelnut coffee beans = 4 pounds
