let number of dimes = x
=< Number of nickels = 31 -x
Total amount = $2.4 = 240 cents
So we have
10x + 5(31-x) = 240
=> 10x + 155 - 5x = 240
=> 5x = 85
=> x = 17
=> dimes = 17
nickels = 14
