We assume the quadratic equation is Ax^2 + Bx +C = 0, A,B,C are constants.

Ax^2 + Bx +C = 0

Ax^2 + Bx = -C

A(x^2 + (B/A)x) = -C

x^2 + (B/A)x = -C/A

x^2 + (B/A)x + B^2/4A^2  = -C/A + B^2/4A^2

(x + (B/2A))^2 = -C/A + B^2/4A^2

x + (B/2A) = +/- sqrt(-C/A + B^2/4A^2)

So

x = (-B +/- sqrt(B^2 -4AC))/2A

So the solutions are x = (-B + sqrt(B^2 -4AC))/2A or x = (-B - sqrt(B^2 -4AC))/2A
