Problema Solution

Electron in the hydrogen atom moves at a constant speed of 2.2 x 106 m/s in a circle around the nucleus of the atom. The centripetal acceleration of the electron is 9.13 x 1022 m/s2. Find the a. radius of the electron orbit. b. number of revolutions per second made by the electron.

Answer provided by our tutors

acceleration = v^2/r

v=2.2*106 m/s

so acceleration = 9.13 x 1022 m/s2

so radius = 9.13 x 1022/(2.2*106)^2

             = 0.1716 metres

circumference= 2*3.14 *.1716=1.0783 metres

so number of revolutions = 2.2 * 106/1.0783 = 216.27 revolutions made per second by the electron
