A bookcase is to be constructed as shown in the figure to the right. The height of the bookcase is 4 feet longer than the length of a shelf. If 26 feet of lumber is available for the entire unit(including the shelves, but not the back of the bookcase) find the length and height of the unit.

shelf length is x, so height is x+4
4x + [2(x+4)] = 26
6x + 8 = 26
==> 6x = 18 ==> x = 3 answer
