A bookcase is to be constructed as shown in the figure to the right. The height of the bookcase is 4 feet longer than the length of a shelf. If 26 feet of lumber is available for the entire unit(including the 2 shelves, but not the back of the bookcase) find the length and height of the unit.

The length is x, the height is (x+4)
The equation is
3x+2(x+4) = 26
5x = 18
x = 3.6
So the length is 3.6 ft, the height is 7.6 ft
