Problema Solution
A steamboat cruise down the Mississippi Rive takes 1 hour and 30 minutes (1.5 h). The crise back up the river takes 1 hour and 48 minutes (1.8 h) because the boat goes 6 mi/h slower against the current. The distance on either trip is the same. At what speed does the boat travel in each direction?
Answer provided by our tutors
Let assume,
the speed that the boat travel is X
so it goes X*1.5 miles according to current and
" " (X-6)*1.8 miles against current
both of them are same. So
X*1.5=(X-6)*1.8
or 1.5X=1.8X - 10.8
or -1.8X +1.5X = -10.8
or -0.3X = - 10.8
or X = 36
