Problema Solution

A piece of wire that is 100cm long is to be cut into two pieces, each to be bent to make a square. The length of one square is to be twice the length of the a side of the other. How should the wire be cut?

Answer provided by our tutors

side of small square = s

side of large square = 2s

Perimeter of small square = 4s then perimeter of large square is 8s

4s+ 8s =100

s= 25/3

The shorter wire would be 4s or 33 1/3 cm while teh other is 66 2/3 cm
