Problema Solution

The cafeteria sells 7 cartons of juice for every 8 cartons of milk that it sells for breakfast.If 195 students buy breakfast at the cafeteria, how many cartons of milk would the cafeteria sell?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

x = the number of cartons of juices sold

y = the number of cartons of milk sold

Assuming that each student buys either juice or milk we have:

x : y = 7 : 8 cross-multiply

8x = 7y

x + y = 195

We have the following system of equations:

8x = 7y

x + y = 195

........

x = 91 cartons of juice

y = 104 cartons of milk

The cafeteria would sell 104 cartons of milk.
