On the first part of a trip to Carmel traveling on the freeway, Marge averaged 50 mph. On the rest of the trip, which was 5 mi longer than the first part, she averaged 40 mph. Find the total distance to Carmel if the second part of the trip took 30 minutes more than the first part.

v2 = 40 mph
d = the length of the first part of the trip
d + 5 = the length of the second part of the trip
Since speed = distance/time we have time = distance/speed:
50/d = 1/2 + 40/(d + 5)
