Thirty percent of the greens were added to fifteen percent of the purples and the total was 21.four times the number of purples was 10 more then 3 times the number of greens. How many were green and how many were purple?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let

g = the number of greens

p = the number of purples

30% of the greens were added to 14% of the purples and the total was 21:

0.30g + 0.15p = 21

4 times the number of purples was 10 more then 3 times the number of greens:

4p = 10 + 3g

We have the following system of equations:

0.30g + 0.15p = 21

4p = 10 + 3g

........

g = 50 green

p = 40 purple

There were 50 green and 40 purple.
