Rules For division

In the previous section we have divided two powers with
the same base using properties of division and
multiplication .

We can also divide by subtracting the exponents .

To divide powers with the same base, keep the base and
subtract the exponent in the denominator from the
exponent in the numerator .

Example: Divide

Solution : Subtract the exponents of x
8-2=6
Write the base with the difference of exponents .

Therefore

Zero as an Exponent :*

Zero can be an exponent . Any power with a zero
exponent is always equal to 1.

Example: multiply

Solution : always write 1 for the power with a 0 exponent.

Now simplify .
