Rules For division
In the previous section we have divided two powers with
the same base using properties of division and
multiplication .
We can also divide by subtracting the exponents .
To divide powers with the same base, keep the base and
subtract the exponent in the denominator from the
exponent in the numerator .
Example: Divide
Solution : Subtract the exponents of x
8-2=6
Write the base with the difference of exponents .
Therefore
Zero as an Exponent :*
Zero can be an exponent . Any power with a zero
exponent is always equal to 1.
Example: multiply
Solution : always write 1 for the power with a 0 exponent.
