BASIC ALGEBRA

COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course includes basic algebra concepts and skills needed for success in higher level courses.
Topics include real numbers, exponents, polynomials, rational expressions , graphing, radicals, factoring and solving linear and quadratic equations and applications.
PREREQUISITES: A grade of "C" or better in MAT 0012 or equivalent . Student enrollment in any mathematics course is contingent upon approval of the Mathematics Department. This means that students who have been misplaced may have their schedule changed.
LAB
REQUIREMENT:
As part of this course, you are required to register for MAT 0024L. In order to successfully complete the lab requirement, you must do the following:
1. You must attend the required meetings with your lab instructor at the time and location designated in your schedule for MAT 0024L.
2. You must spend the required time doing homework, receiving tutoring, etc. in the Academic Resource
Center.
Your participation in both components of the lab requirement will be monitored and counts towards your final grade.
TEXT: Introductory Algebra by Elayn Martin-Gay, 3rd Edition (required).
MATERIALS: A scientific calculator is required . It is allowed during chapter tests and quizzes as directed by your instructor. Calculators with symbolic manipulation capabilities (e.g., TI-89, TI-92) will not be allowed for use during exams. Your section may require that all students use the supplemental software (such as MyMathLab). If your instructor requires the software, it must be purchased by the end of the first week of classes.
EXAMINATIONS: There will be four chapter tests, a department final exam and a required comprehensive Florida College Basic Skills Exit Exam. NO MAKE-UP TESTS or EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. CALCULATORS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE FLORIDA COLLEGE BASIC SKILLS EXIT EXAM.
GRADING: In order to pass the course, a student must earn a grade of 70% or better on the Florida College Basic Skills Exit Exam and an overall 75% average of the total points. Students who earn a grade of “A” or “B” in this course are allowed to take the placement test to attempt to place into MGF 1106 or MGF 1107.
  POINTS SCALE
4 Chapter Tests 400 94 – 100%= A
Assigned Math Lab 150 85 – 93% = B
Open Math Lab 75 75 – 84% = C
Quizzes/Participation/Projects/Homework* 100 – 200 0 – 74% = No Pass = N
Department Final Exam (cumulative) 100
Florida College Basic Skills Exit Exam 200 Below 70% on Exit Exam = NO PASS

*Instructor will choose composition of these points.

ATTENDANCE: All late arrivals, early departures and absences must be discussed and cleared with the instructor. More than 3 hours of unexcused absences or excessive tardiness may result in your withdrawal from the course.
WITHDRAWAL: July 20, 2009 is the last day to withdraw with a “W”. If you remain in the course after that date, you must receive a grade. Withdrawal after the indicated date may be granted only by the Provost and shall be based on major extenuating circumstances. A student is allowed a maximum of three attempts per course. On the third attempt the student cannot be withdrawn and must receive a grade. More information regarding this policy is available in the current Manatee Community College Catalog or the class schedule.
ELECTRONICS POLICY: Cell phone etiquette must be observed: In-class usage is restricted to emergency situations. Cell phones are not allowed to be used during tests, not even as a calculator. Inform the instructor before class of any extenuating circumstances. Electronic devices, such as iPods, Blackberries, etc. are not permitted to be used or worn in class.
