GCF & Factoring by Grouping

Objective: To factor
polynomials with a greatest
common factor and to factor
four terms by grouping .
GCF

Greatest Common Factor (GCF) –
greatest number that is a factor of all
integers

Variables ? – Use the lowest power of
each common
variable.

Ex.) Find the GCF of 40, 60, and 80.
GCF = 20

 EXAMPLES

Ex.) Find the GCF
of 64, 80 and 96
Ex.) Find the GCF
of 18x3 and 6x.
Solution : 16 Solution: 6x
Ex.) Find the GCF

Clue 2: 2 pairs of terms with
a GCF
Steps for Factoring with Grouping

1. Check polynomial for GCF & factor
out.
2. Split polynomial into two pairs .
3. Factor out GCF from each pair.
4. Look for common binomial .
5. Re-write with common binomial
times other factors in a binomial.
6. Check using FOIL.
